Russell, Elliott & Gigginstown take the honours at The Festival in 2018

Press Release 16th March 2018 Cheltenham

RUSSELL, ELLIOTT AND GIGGINSTOWN STEAL THE SHOW

Irish rider Davy Russell was crowned the Boodles Leading Jockey of this year's Festival following four victories at Prestbury Park this week.

Successful on Balko Des Flos (G1 Ryanair Air Chase), Delta Work (Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle), The Storyteller (Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate) and Presenting Percy (RSA Chase), Russell was landing the title for the first time.

39-year-old Russell and 18-year-old Jack Kennedy both rode four winners at this week's Festival, but Russell won the award on countback, having achieved one more second-placed finish than Kennedy.

Russell said: "I gave every horse 100% and I got the rub of the green. I was glad that I was able to win for the owners who have been so good to me throughout the season and my career, so that's probably the most pleasing bit.

"This place is a special place and a special place for my family. To see jockeys like Ruby Walsh, Richard Dunwoody and Charlie Swan, jockeys I have looked up to all my life, and to be crowned leading jockey at Cheltenham alongside them is very special for me."

Gordon Elliott, for the second year running, has won the Irish Independent Leading Trainer Award at The Festival. His eight victories just eclipsed Willie Mullins' seven wins.

Gigginstown House Stud won the NetJets Leading Owner Award with seven victories this week.

WOMAN WINS £96,000 ON TOTEPOOL PLACEPOT

The Totepool placepot dividend for Gold Cup Day came to £32,088.70, and the net pool was £900,410.75.

There were 28.06 winning units, of which 6.35 were on-course. One of those belonged to a woman who has been coming to The Festival for 18 years.

For a £3 straight line, she won £96,266.10. She took £1,000 in cash and accepted a cheque for the remainder.

Another racegoer won £64,177.40 for a 50p perm (total stake of £32).
