CAN LIZZIE KELLY RIDE A WINNER FOR MULLINS?

Lizzie Kelly increased the number of women jockeys to have ridden winners at The Festival to 12 when she took Tuesday's Ultima Handicap Chase on Coo Star Sivola - and she became the first to do so as a professional jockey. She has two chances to add to that success today; she rides Tea For Two for her stepfather Nick Williams in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup, and she also picks up the ride on Burrows Saint for Willie Mullins in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.

Kelly is one of seven women with rides at The Festival today.

Top Irish amateur Katie Walsh has already collared a winner this week - Relegate in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, which brought her lifetime Festival total to three - and she has two good opportunities to do so again. Sandsend, trained by Relegate's handler Willie Mullins, is a 12/1 chance for the Randox Health County Handicap Hurdle, and Alan Fleming's Foxrock is 7/1 for the St James's Place Foxhunter Chase.

Walsh's sister-in-law Nina Carberry is the most successful woman rider in the history of The Festival, having ridden seven winners here. Two of those were in the St James's Place Foxhunter Chase aboard On The Fringe (2015 and 2016), and Carberry is reunited with the Enda Bolger-trained 13-year-old again today. Carberry had to miss the ride on On The Fringe in the 2017 race as she was pregnant with her daughter, Rosie.

Walsh and Carberry are joined in the St James's Place Foxhunter Chase - the highlight of the season for amateur riders - by Harriet Tucker, who is jocked up on last year's winner Pacha Du Polder for Paul Nicholls, and Sarah Rippon, who rides and trains Vincitore.

Professional jockey Bridget Andrews, whose amateur sister Gina won the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase at last year's Festival, has three rides today for Dan Skelton: Mohaayed (Randox Health County Handicap Hurdle), Tommy Rapper (Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle) and Born Survivor (Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase).

And Bryony Frost, who has enjoyed a dream season since turning professional after her victory in the St James's Place Foxhunter Chase at The Festival in 2017, partners Brelan D'As for her boss Paul Nicholls in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.

The first of the 12 women to have enjoyed success at The Festival was Caroline Beasley, who took the 1983 Foxhunter Chase on Eliogarty. She was followed by Gee Armytage, who posted a double in 1987 aboard Gee-A and The Ellier. Katie Rimell won the 1989 Foxhunter Chase, Polly Curling took the same race in 1995 and Fiona Needham lifted the magnificent trophy in 2002. Rilly Goschen won the Foxhunter in 2004.

In 2005 Nina Carberry rode the first of her seven Festival winners by capturing the Boodles Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle with Dabiroun. Katie Walsh enjoyed a double in 2010. Bryony Frost (Pacha Du Polder, St James's Place Foxhunter), Lisa O'Neill (Tiger Roll, National Hunt Chase) and Gina Andrews (Domesday Book, Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase) added their names to The Festival victory roll in 2017.
